Summer 2020 Youth Art Classes

Abigail is thrilled to offer summer art classes to youth ages 10-17!

All classes are conducted over Zoom, unless otherwise noted as in-person. All you need is a strong internet connection and a laptop, tablet, or smart phone to connect from any time zone. Session 1: Introduction to Watercolor

Ages 10-17

Tues/Thurs 12:30-2:00 p.m. PT

A great introduction to watercolor painting and the important techniques needed to create richly colored and carefully observed works. Paint your favorite cartoon to practice washes and mixing vibrant colors. Then, learn realistic blending and color mixing in the landscape genre.

Session 2: Learn to Draw Landscape and Architecture

Ages 10-17

Tues/Thurs 10:00-11:30 a.m. PT

Explore the mark-making techniques of Van Gogh to capture rhythm and space in landscape drawing. Learn to use linear perspective to draw buildings and architecture in realistic space.

Additional Material: Your favorite pen.

Session 2: Learn to Draw Everyday Objects

Ages 10-17

Mon/Wed 1:00-2:30 p.m. PT

Learn techniques to make drawing your favorite form of self-expression. Using graphite pencils, we'll practice measuring, proportion, line, and value to create realistic still life drawings.

Session 2: Watercolor Animals

Ages 10-17

Tues/Thurs 12:30-2:00 p.m. PT

Explore fundamental watercolor techniques while painting your favorite animal. We'll practice textures of fur and feathers, use salt to paint sea foam, and mix and match colors from animal photo references. Additional Material: An old, fanned out brush for texture.

Session 3: Watercolor Still Life 

Ages 10-17

Tues/Thurs 12:30-2:00 p.m. PT

In this watercolor session, practice your observational skills in the still life genre. Learn to mix warm and cool colors to depict light, volume, and shadow. This course is best taken as a continuation of Session 1 or 2, or with previous watercolor experience.

Online Private Art Lessons

All Ages

Contact me to schedule private art lessons in drawing, watercolor, or oil painting. We'll paint or draw step by step together over Zoom. I also offer feedback and guidance for students putting together an art portfolio for admission to high school or college. Lessons are billed at $75 per hour with flexible scheduling times.

Students must supply their own materials for these classes.

  • Sketchbook

  • Graphite Pencils (2H, 2B, 4B)

  • Eraser (Kneaded or Gum Eraser)

  • Pencil Sharpener

Watercolor Classes: 

  • Watercolor Paints (Any type of basic watercolor set, yellow, red, and blue minimum colors)

  • Plastic Well Palette (like this one)

  • Round Watercolor Brush (like this one)

  • Watercolor Paper (Strathmore 140 Ib. Cold Press recommended link)

  • Pencil (2H recommended)

  • Eraser

  • Cup for Water

  • Paper Towels

  • Masking Tape

  • Piece of cardboard slightly larger than the watercolor paper to tape the paper to.
