Summer 2020 Youth Art Classes

Abigail is thrilled to offer online summer art classes to youth ages 10-17!

All classes are conducted over Zoom. All you need is a strong internet connection and a laptop, tablet, or smart phone to connect from any time zone. See class descriptions and materials lists below. Session 1: Learn to Draw Everyday Objects

Tues/Thurs 10:00-11:30 a.m. PT

Learn techniques to make drawing your favorite form of self-expression. Using graphite pencils, we'll practice measuring, proportion, line, and value to create realistic still life drawings.

Session 1: Introduction to Watercolor

Tues/Thurs 12:30-2:00 p.m. PT

A great introduction to watercolor painting and the important techniques needed to create richly colored and carefully observed works. Paint your favorite cartoon to practice washes and mixing vibrant colors. Then, learn realistic blending and color mixing in the landscape genre.

Session 1: Drawing for Kids Ages 6-9

Mon/Wed 9:00-10:00 a.m. PT

A special one-hour class geared for kids under 10. Learn to draw your favorite cartoons and animals shape by shape. Use crayons, colored pencils, or oil pastels to create vibrantly colored works. We'll draw the main character together, then add your own details to let your imagination run wild! *$100 for the session

Session 2: Learn to Draw Landscape and


Tues/Thurs 10:00-11:30 a.m. PT

Explore the mark-making techniques of Van Gogh to capture rhythm and space in landscape drawing. Learn to use linear perspective to draw buildings and architecture in realistic space.

Additional Material: Your favorite pen.

Session 2: Watercolor Animals

Tues/Thurs 12:30-2:00 p.m. PT

Explore fundamental watercolor techniques while painting your favorite animal. We'll practice textures of fur and feathers, use salt to paint sea foam, and mix and match colors from animal photo references. Additional Material: An old, fanned out brush for texture.

Session 3: Cartoon Arts and Illustration

Tues/Thurs 10:00-11:30 a.m. PT

Build your drawing skills and create your own original comic. In this class, you’ll learn the art of storytelling through fun drawing games and your favorite comic artists. Practice drawing people and facial expressions, inking and coloring techniques, and storyboarding to develop your signature style.

Session 3: Watercolor Still Life 

Tues/Thurs 12:30-2:00 p.m. PT

In this watercolor session, practice your observational skills in the still life genre. Learn to mix warm and cool colors to depict light, volume, and shadow. This course is best taken as a continuation of Session 1 or 2, or with previous watercolor experience. 

New In-Person Class Meets in Magnuson Park in Seattle


Session 2: Socially Distanced Outdoor Drawing and Watercolor

Fridays 12:00-3:00 p.m. PT

Do you live in the Seattle area? Looking for a safe way for youth to take an art class in person this summer? This plein air class meets up in a small group (5 or less) in Magnuson Park in Seattle. We'll find comfortable spots to safely spread out and work from direct observation of nature. Learn to interpret landscape scenes and draw trees using shapes of value and color in graphite and watercolor. You'll need both drawing and watercolor paintings materials, as well as a blanket or towel to sit on. In the event of rain, classes will be re-scheduled. *Please wear a mask to comply with CDC guidelines.

Online Private Art Lessons

Contact me to schedule private art lessons in drawing, watercolor, or oil painting. We'll paint or draw step by step together over Zoom. I also offer feedback and guidance for students putting together an art portfolio for admission to high school or college. Lessons are billed at $75 per hour with flexible scheduling times.

Required Materials:

Students must supply their own materials for these classes.

Drawing Classes: 

  • Sketchbook

  • Graphite Pencils (2H, 2B, 4B)

  • Eraser (Kneaded or Gum Eraser)

  • Pencil Sharpener

Watercolor Classes: 

  • Watercolor Paints (tubes or pans, yellow, red, and blue minimum colors)

  • Plastic Well Palette (like this one)

  • Round Watercolor Brush (like this one)

  • Watercolor Paper (Strathmore 140 Ib. Cold Press recommended link)

  • Masking Tape and piece of cardboard slightly larger than watercolor paper

  • Pencil (2H recommended) and Eraser

  • Cup for Water, Paper Towels

Please note, classes require a minimum number of enrolled students to run. If classes are under-enrolled, you can either change your registration to a different class/session, or receive a full refund via Paypal.
